A Playful Pioneers Picture Album

Our latest Playful Pioneers Adventures. Make sure to check back throughout the year!

“At noontime everyone was allowed to move about the schoolroom and talk quietly. Eliza Jane opened the dinner-pail on her desk. It held bread-and-butter and sausage, doughnuts and apples, and four delicious apple turnovers, their plump crusts filled with melting slices of apple and spicy brown juice. After Almonzo had eaten every crumb of his turneover and licked his fingers, he took a drink of water from the pail with a dipper in it, on a bench in the corner. Then he put on his cap and coat and mittens and went out to play….” 🍎📚🍎 We started #theplayfulpioneers today and love it! ❤️ #farmerboy #littlehousebooks #readaloud #litlunch #playfulpioneersweek1
“He sat with the pail between his feet, and milked steadily. Left, right! Swish, swish! The streams of milk slanted into the pail, while the cows licked up their grain and crunched their carrots.” #farmerboy #CisforCow #theplayfulpioneers #thepeacefulpreschool #farmanatomy #theOlogy #littlehousebooks #playfulpioneersweek1
For chapter 3, we popped popcorn, colored moccasins, and made beaded corn on the cob. 🌽 Can you tell we’ve never made stove top popcorn before! The simple joys! ❤️ I told them how Native American tribes would sometimes trade corn for beads. And reminisced about the time I had to thread thousands of pony beads for an exhibit at the museum. I showed them how Seminole women wore dozens of necklaces at one time. They couldn’t imagine wearing all that in the Florida heat. ☀️ #farmerboy #playfulpioneers #readaloud #audible #thegoodandthebeautiful #artsandcrafts #toolboxesforteaching #CisforCorn #CisforCrafts #museumoffloridahistory #seminoletribeofflorida #textilehistorian #museumcurator #costumedesign

“The friendly cow all red and white, I love with all my heart: She gives me cream with all her might, To eat with apple tart.” 🐄 #CisforCow #RobertLouisStevenson #thepeacefulpreschool #theplayfulpioneers #farmerboy #starandbright #playfulpioneersweek2

“Thud! said the treadle. Clackety-clack! said the shuttle. Thump! said the hand-bar, and back flew the shuttle. Mother’s workroom was large and bright, and warm from the heating-stove’s chimney. Mother’s little rocking chair was by one window, and beside it a basket of carpet-rags, torn for sewing.” All three kids really enjoyed learning to use a loom today. They picked it up so quick! Im thinking of having them practice different types of weaving with colored strips of paper so they can better visualize the pattern? One of my favorite courses in college was learning all the different types of textiles and how they are made. I would love to do textile design one day. 🌿 * Our loom is linked in my profile. 😊 #farmerboy #theplayfulpioneers #CisforCraft #handcrafts #readaloud #textiledesign #multisensorylearning #melissaanddoug #loomweaving #playfulpioneersweek2

“Ten pancakes cooked on the smoking griddle, and as fast as they were done Mother added another cake to each stack and buttered it lavishly and covered it with maple sugar. Butter and sugar melted together and soaked in fluffy pancakes and dropped all down their crisp edges.” 🥞 We enjoyed pancakes with Almanzo. We added chocolate chips to the batter and drizzled a little peanut butter syrup to make it a special treat. We are also enjoying this day of rest with the Wilder family. ❤️ However, I don’t think my children will sit as still though. 😬 #farmerboy #sunday #readaloud #rest #theplayfulpioneers #pancakes #playfulpioneersweek2

“Where’s my little half-pint of sweet cider half drunk up?” 🍎 A new year and new book. 😍 #littlehouseinthebigwoods #theplayfulpioneers #readaloud #playfulpioneersweek8 #littlehousebooks #applecider
Chapter 2: Winter Days and Winter Nights. ❄️ “Then, standing one on each side, Laura and Mary straightened the covers, tucked them in well at the foot and the sides, plumped up the pillows and put them in place. Then Ma pushed the trundle bed into its place under the big bed. After this was done, Ma began the work that belonged to that day. Each day had its own proper work. Ma used to say: Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday, Mend on Wednesday, Churn on Thursday, Clean on Friday, Bake on Saturday, Rest on Sunday.” ✨ We are practicing the habit of making our beds each day. Our daughter is the only one who remembers and reminds us each day. I recently found this damaged snowflake quilt in Pottery Barn’s clearance section. ❄️ Only took 5 minutes to mend and saved me $200+. 😳😬😍 #mendonwednesdy #seamstress #lauraingallswilder #playfulpioneersweek8 #potterybarn #habittraining #theplayfulpioneers #homeschoolmom #littlehousebooks
Chapter 4: Christmas: “Ma made a pancake man for each one of the children. Ma called each one in turn to bring her plate, and each could stand by the stove and watch, while with spoonful of batter Ma put on the arms and the legs and the head.” 🥞 Who knew my husband has been keeping his pancake men making skills a secret all these years… Now the kids are going to expect these every Sunday.😬😂😍 #littlehousebooks #theplayfulpioneers #pancakemen #playfulpioneersweek8 #mylittlehousecookbook
Lincoln Logs + Little House on the Prairie + Lunchtime. 🌾 We seem to be getting through our chapter books much slower than I remember. 🧐 Pa could’ve built Ma her dream cabin faster than we can get through this series. 😂 It must be Spring. 🌼 My kids would rather be out playing this time of year. We will catch up this summer. ☀️ #theplayfulpioneers #playfulpioneersweek12 #litlunch #lincolnlogs #learnthroughplay #littlehouseontheprairie
